Description

Perennial evergreen vines, up to 20m long. Stem gray brown or black brown, smooth, tender branches with scalelike pubescence, scales usually have 10-20 radiating ribs; rooting and climbing by air. The leaves on sterile branches are triangular ovate or halberd shaped, 5-12cm in length and 3-10cm in width, all or three lobed; the leaves on flower branches are elliptic long ovate or elliptic lanceolate, all or three lobed. The upper surface is dark green and glossy, the lower surface is light green or yellowish green, and the lateral veins are obvious. Umbel terminal, pedicel brownish yellow pilose; calyx 5-toothed, dense brown scales; petals 5-triangular ovate, yellowish white or greenish white, with scales outside; stamens 5, crisscross with petals, anthers purple; ovary inferior, 5-locular, style connate, disk raised, yellow. The fruit is round, yellow or red. The flowering period is from September to November, and the fruiting period is from March to May next year.

 

Chemical Composition

The stem contains tannin and resin. The leaves contain hederin, inositol, carotene and sugars.
