Description

Kelp is a type of large, brown seaweed that grows in shallow, nutrient-rich saltwater near coastal fronts around the world.  In most kelp, the thallus (or body) consists of flat or leaf-like structures known as blades. Blades originate from elongated stem-like structures, the stipes. The holdfast, a root-like structure, anchors the kelp to the substrate of the ocean.

Chemical Composition

It mainly contains polysaccharide, alginic acid, laminarin, mannitol and inorganic salt. Laminaria contains alginic acid, crude protein, mannitol, ash, potassium and iodine. In addition, it contains alginate, fucoidan, eugenol, pipercene and hexanal.
