Description
It is a freshwater, unicellular green microalga with a rather complex life cycle. Among various natural sources, Haematococcus is an exclusive producer of astaxanthin (pink carotenoid). The biosynthesis of astaxanthin is usually accompanied by the transformation of ovoid green vegetative cells into red cysts under stress conditions (nutrient deficiency, salinity, and high temperatures, in combination with high irradiance), due to the increased carotenoid deposition. When the condition becomes favorable for growth, the cysts germinate–releasing a large number of new motile cells.
Chemical Composition
It mainly contains astaxanthin, astaxanthin acid monoester, astaxanthin oleic acid diester, ergosterenol, trilinolenic acid glyceride, etc.
