Description

Evergreen trees, 4-6 m high, up to 18 m tall, with no branches on the main stem, and dioecious. The leaves are nearly leathery, with odd-pinnate compound leaves, spirally arranged at the top of the trunk, and are 20-40 cm long. The base of the petiole is enlarged, and the leaf scars are obvious after falling off. The leaflets are 5-15 pairs, opposite, obovate-lanceolate, sessile or nearly sessile. Panicles axillary, small flowers, 5 petals, separated. Drupe, oval or round, 1~3 cm long, 0.5~1.2 cm wide, green, red to black when mature, with extremely bitter taste. The root does not branch, and the deepest penetration can reach 2 m. Flowering period from June to July, fruiting period from August to September.
