Description

Blackcurrant is a medium-sized shrub, growing not more than 1.5 m high with multiple erect branches. Leaves form alternate bunches that are larger (10 cm) and darker than those of the red currant. The pentamerous flowers have a crowned calyx, containing the petals, which are joined together; they are white and they sometimes have a violet border.

Flowers are produced in racemes known as "strigs" up to 8 cm long containing 10–20 flowers, each about 8 mm in diameter. Each flower has a hairy calyx with yellow glands, the five lobes of which are longer than the inconspicuous petals.

 

Chemical Composition

It mainly contains anthocyanins, y-3-rut, dp-3-rut, cy-3-glu and p-3-glu.
