Description

It is a genus of plants in the sesame family, native to southern Africa. This plant gets its name from the appearance of its fruit, which is covered with hooks meant to attach onto animals in order to spread the seeds. The roots and tubers of the plant are used to make medicine.

Chemical Composition

The tuber of uncinate contains a variety of components. The main compounds with pharmacological activity are iridoid glycosides, which contain about 3%, including harpagoside, procumbide, Harpagide and 8-benzofuranyl-harpagide, among which the most important is uncinate glycoside. Other active substances may be flavonol glycosides, kaempferol, luteolin, chlorogenic acid and cinnamic acid, acteoside of phenylethanol, quinones, uncinate quinones, ursolic acid, oleanolic acid and their derivatives.
