Description

It grows to about 15 m tall. The leaves are deciduous, arranged alternately, simple ovate with an acuminate tip, 8–16 cm long, and with a serrated margin. The flowers are inconspicuous, small and greenish; the fruit, June to November, is a winged samara with one seed, very similar to an elm samara in appearance, 2–3 cm long and 1–2 cm broad.

Chemical Composition

The bark contains Eucommia gum, rubber materials polymerized by trans isoprene, pinoresinol diglucoside, guaiacol glycerin, oleoresin, etc., as well as its glycosides, dehydrogegenin, Eucommia polysaccharide, aucubin, chlorogenic acid, kaempferol, amino acids, etc. And eucommiol, medioresinol-4 '- glucoside, ulmoside, etc.            

The leaves contains glucosinolate, lirioside, pinoresinol diglucoside, eucommitol, chlorogenic acid, etc. It also contains volatile components mainly composed of 2-ethylfurylacrolein, fatty acids mainly composed of linoleic acid and inorganic elements mainly composed of calcium.
