Description
Deciduous tree, up to 25 meters, palm-shaped compound leaves opposite, leaflets 5-7, oblong or oblong-ovate, apex acuminate, base wedge, edge serrated, and sparse pilose only when the base is young , 13-17 pairs of lateral veins, with small petioles; total petioles are long. Large panicle; male flowers and bisexual flowers on the same plant; calyx tube-shaped, irregularly 5-lobed; petals 4, white, with long claws; 6 stamens, filaments of unequal length; upper ovary. The capsule is nearly spherical, flat top, brownish-yellow, with small protrusions, and 3-valved when ripe. The seeds are nearly spherical, and the hilum is pale white, accounting for about 1/2 of the seeds. Flowering period is from May to July, fruit period is from August to September.
Chemical Composition
Horse chestnut seed contains a triterpene saponin mixture called escin (3-6%), flavonoids, condensed tannins, quinines, sterols and fatty acids (including linolenic acid, palmitic acid and steric acid), and coumarins (including aesculetin, fraxin [fraxetin glucoside], and scopolin [scopoletin glucoside]).
