Description

Perennial herb. Single leaf, opposite, papery, leaf ovate, rectangular lanceolate. Racemes are terminal or axillary, integrated into large panicles; lobes triangular-lanceolate; corolla white with purple markings on the lower lip, two-lipped; 2 stamens; upper ovary. The capsule is flat, with 2 longitudinal grooves, sparsely glandular hairs, and splits into 2 fruit petals when mature. The seeds are numerous, bony, wrinkled, bald, yellow or dark brown. Flowering period is from August to September, fruiting period is October.

Andrographolide, deoxyandrographolide and neoandrographolide are contained in the leaves of Andrographis Paniculata.          

The root of Andrographis Paniculata contains andrographolide glycosides, andrographolide, 3-o-methylandrographolide, 5-hydroxy-7,8-dimethoxyflavone and other flavonoids.
